Application Procedures
Interested physcians or students must apply through the Electronic Resident Application Service (ERAS) by December 15th. In order to make the recruiting process more efficient and accurate, while providing a timely response to your questions and needs, communications from our office through-out the recruiting process will be via e-mail.

National Resident Matching Program Codes:
All PGY-1 interns are selected through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). You must be registered with NRMP to be ranked for the match. Below are our NRMP program codes:
Internal Medicine Residency program codes:
- 1732140C0 - Categorical PGY-1 Internal Medicine (27 match spots)
- 1732140C1 - Categorical-Research PGY-1 Internal Medicine (1 match spot)
- 1732140P0 - Preliminary PGY-1 Internal Medicine (13 match spots)
- 1732140P1 - Preliminary PGY-1 Medicine/Ophthalmology* (3 match spots)
* Only applicants that have matched with the San Francisco Match with the University of Utah Ophthalmology Residency Program for same match year can and must rank our Preliminary PGY-1 Medicine/Ophthalmology track. Because of this, it is not required of Ophthalomogy applicants to interview with Internal Medicine.
Affiliated residency programs codes:

* Any applicants that match with the University of Utah Neurology Residency program are automatically placed in the Internal Medicine Preliminary program for their PGY-1 year. Because of this, interviewing with the Internal Medicine Preliminary program is not required.

Selection Criteria:
Graduates from Medical Schools in U.S., Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand:
- Graduated from medical school within the last 5 years
- Pass USMLE step 1
- No failures or repeat courses
- 3 letters of recommendation
U.S. Citizen Graduates from U.S. Osteopathic Medical Schools:
- Graduated from medical school within the last 5 years
- USMLE Step 1 and 2 scores of 88 or greater on the first attempt
- COMLEX scores are not accepted in place of USMLE
- Passing score on Step 2 CS on first attempt
- No failures or repeat courses
- 3 letters of recommendation
U.S. Citizen Graduates from Caribbean Medical Schools:
- Graduated from medical school within the last 5 years
- USMLE Step 1 and 2 scores of 92 or greater on the first attempt
- Passing score on Step 2 CS on first attempt
- No failures or repeat courses
- 3 letters of recommendation
Graduates from Medical Schools Outside the U.S., Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand:

Transfer Residents:
Current Internal Medicine PGY-2 or 3 residents desiring to transfer into our categorical program may inquire by emailing their CV or latest ERAS application and their USMLE board scores 1, 2, 2CS, and 3 to the following email address: aline.campbell@hsc.utah.edu. All residents being considered, if there is an open position to fill, will be contacted by the program director via email, requesting the following information for further consideration: 2 letters of recommendations, a letter from the current program director, and an evaluation performance summary report.
