Training Programs Offered

Our internal medicine residency program offers the following training tracks:

  • Categorical - provides the training required for board certification in medical specialties. This is a 3-year program with an outpatient continuity clinic experience through-out.
  • Preliminary - one-year program beginning in the PGY-1 year that provides prerequisite training for advanced programs.  This includes University of Utah Neurology PGY-1 residents.
  • Physician-Scientist - Categorical/research track for combined MD-PhD physicians.
  • Preliminary - Medicine/Ophthalmology - one-year program encompasing 4.5 months of ophthalmology training.  This track is required for all University of Utah Ophthalmology matched applicants.

The University of Utah also offers opportunities for a Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program and additional training through our Internal Medicine Fellowships Program.

Our training programs provide exposure to each internal medicine subspecialty, so residents become aware of the role and contribution of each to effective patient care.  Focused exposures are given to the areas of neurology, dermatology, and various other non-internal medicine subspecialties.  International opportunities also exist.
